What is Delta G.E.M.S.?

Delta GEMS is a program developed by the National Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a transition for African-American young ladies who have aged out of Delta Academy. As a result, Delta Academy II: Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) was formed.

Building upon the premise of Delta Academy: Catching the Dreams of Tomorrow, Delta GEMS is a natural outgrowth and expansion for the continuation of that program. Delta GEMS is made of African-American young ladies aged 14-18 and/or in grades 9 through 12. GEMS invites young women who have potential, but need guidance, support, and skills to achieve success. The program focuses on young women who are interested in developing leadership skills; who are actively pursuing college and/or career options; who need encouragement and support in the pursuit of higher learning.

Sessions occur at least once a month from September – May. Participants are required to attend every session.

What are the goals of Delta G.E.M.S.?

· To instill in our girls the need to excel academically
· To provide tools that will enable our girls to sharpen and enhance their skills to achieve high levels of academic success
· To assist our girls in proper goal setting and planning for their futures—high school and beyond
· To create compassionate, caring and community-minded young women by actively involving them in service learning and
    community service opportunities
